So much ridiculousness!!! It is GENETICALLY impossible to breed this breed with all the color restrictions!!! White only hides the color differences underneath.
Just like Yorkies the tan spreads & the black may or may not fade to blue, but anywhere Yorkies have color, Biewers will have color under the white.
I will bet 90% of find shed champions have tan “arm pits”.

And these color placements are ONLY a FAULT, not a DQ!!! The ONLY DQ is nose, eye rims, lips & pawpads MUST be black. Why pick the dog up off the table to see black pawpads? Can’t the judges see the obvious black pigment in the face?

I’ve been an owner handler for a little over 15 yrs now. I agree that the vast majority of judges are looking at the dog. Sometimes I might disagree that a particular dog was better than the one who won the class but I’m not the one in the ring putting hands on each dog to properly judge structure, etc. The judge is much better positioned to make the correct decision. I’ve defended judges to others on numerous occasions.
Sadly, there are a few bad eggs in every barrel and we tend to focus on those. On one occasion I overheard a a competitor ask a judge why their dog didn’t win BOB and what they could have done better. I was devastated to hear the judge respond with “I will never put up an owner handled dog for BOB”. That judge soured the owner handler so much that they stopped showing. I’ve refused to show under that judge ever since & told other handlers what that particular judge said so they don’t waste an entry fee.

Nice article; however, given the similarity between the Swedish Vallhund (Vastgotaspets) and the Pembroke Welsch corgi, in particular to the Corgi structural similarities in the 30’s, not seeing the Swedish Vallhund mentioned.

Corgi historians have concluded that the Swedish Vallhund most like came on the Viking ships to Whales and were instrumental in the Corgi development but still to this day no clear proof.

Jonricker Kennel, imported the first breeding stock to North America in the early eighties after discovering this Swedish bred while visiting England un the seventies with fellow Great Pyrenees breeders.
To this day, Jonricker Swedish Vallhunds continue to compete. Some notable achievements include multiple National Specialty Best of Breed including five times with Jonricker Nicke Lilltroll who also went Best in Show at the UKC Premiere. Jonricker breeding also includes winning Best of Breed at the Amsterdam World Show amongst a large entry of dogs from the home country.

Should you have an interest in learning more about the Swedish Vallhund,we are more than happy to share our live of the breed. While my mother, Marilyn Thell is no longer with us, I am sure she us watching gleefully to our newest puppies using 20 year old frozen semen.

Well said Barbara.

I totally support Barbara calling out this concern. The sweet expression of a collie is everything.

A huge concern I’ve had over the last 20+ years has been breeders and judges selecting for small eyes . This is NOT what the standard calls for and this is NOT healthy. Also- this is a working breed.

Small eyes are neither sweet nor pretty nor healthy. When collies are born without eyes, due to some selecting for dogs with micro-ophthalmia- this NEEDS to be a wake up call.
